Bleeding Gums Aren’t Normal: 5 Early Signs of Gum Disease

Gum disease is the leading cause of adult tooth loss — and it’s almost entirely preventable when caught early. Know the warning signs.

If your gums bleed when you brush or floss, that’s not “just how your gums are.” Bleeding is inflammation, and inflammation is the first stage of gum disease — the leading cause of tooth loss in adults, and one of the most preventable conditions we treat.

Five early warning signs

Watch for bleeding during brushing, persistent bad breath that returns quickly after brushing, gums that look red or puffy rather than pale pink, gums pulling away from teeth so teeth look longer, and new sensitivity near the gumline. Any one of these is worth a checkup; two or more means book soon.

The good news: early gum disease is reversible

Gingivitis — the first stage — resolves completely with a professional cleaning and two weeks of consistent brushing and flossing. Once it progresses to periodontitis, the damage to bone is permanent and we can only stop it, not undo it. That difference is why early visits matter so much.

If it’s been more than a year since your last cleaning, don’t wait for pain. Gum disease is painless until its late stages — which is exactly what makes it dangerous.
